BarCamp as a part of the civil society?

First of all, little of bit of the history of the event. BarCamp itself, as the event, was held all over the world and finally appears in the CIS. BarCamp was founded by Tim O’Reilly, who was organizing the event just for his friends, as an interest group. The first official BarCamp was help in Europe in California in 2005 year. A lot of people liked the style of the BarCamp event as a free opportunity to find interesting people and create some connections. Finally about 350 BarCamp events have already held all over the world. The event was called as an (un)conference so that it creates the view of the unofficial environment during the conferences.

The purpose of the Kazakhstan event is not really understandable… is it the money making event or the charity and may be something connected to the civil society, but what exactly?

The main question, which is the most important for me is the connection between BarCamp, the event, which posses itself as educational and non-commercial project, which has its sponsors and my course, which is about the New Information Technologies, which helps to create the new surface of the societies in Internet.

I have never heard about such event, and I am so sad not to have the opportunity to be there. I listened to different people, who attended different conferences on BarCamp, and have very different opinions about it.

Some of the conferences were about the products that different companies provide. Were it all connected to the development of the civil societies or the promotion of the products, no one, who were there did not understood that.

One of the representatives of the companies, who gave the speech to the audience, was from the Opera software company. The person was talking about the different tools, which Opera Software provides, and in this case it is easy to understand that it would help people, users or the potential users, who would be attracted by the presentation, to create new online communities and different societies within it – the creation of the civil society.

Also, people from the different ethnic groups and groups of interest were presented on the BarCamp event, for example the people, who did not wanted to fill in the questioners, which actually were done to gather the information about the BarCamp event, where they were kindly invited to be, on Russian or English language, not because of the misunderstanding of the languages but because of the some personal reasons.

The Audience of the event was broken into 3 parts: people, who like the event a lot, and found a lot of useful and interesting information for themselves. The second part of the audience were the people, who did not liked the event at all, they think it was unstructured and too unofficial. And the third part of the BarCamp audience, as I think, were the people, who were promoting their own view on everything, people, who actually created a barriers – people, who denied to speak, listen or read any other languages except Kazakh….

Is the BarCamp the event of the civil societies? As John Naughton in his writing “contested space” writes that the civil societies gives the opportunity to people to lower the barriers to publication and enables groups and individuals to bypass traditional gatekeepers in media and publishing, facilitates rapid communication on a global scale and facilitates the sharing of information resources, after that the question rises – is the BarCamp part of the creation of the civil society? Are those kinds of people on non-commercial and educational events developing a better community by creating barriers between nations? Is it one of the reasons, why different groups of people want to take a part of such events?

On the other hand the BarCamp is the event, which gives the opportunities to people from different parts of the Kazakhstan to came and see Almaty, to meet different people with the same wishes and goals in the life. It creates the opportunity to speak out and tell people what you think. The BarCamp itself looks like the creation of the civil society all the people, who are coming to the event knows the Internet well, doing the work there or just like to serve the Internet, all of them has the connection to the World Web.

Civil society includes different groups of the people such as association, different types of groups, NGOs and of course, it includes democracy, but it does not mean that the groups should force people around do what they want, BarCamp the event, which lows the barriers between nations, languages and different professions, it is the event, which creates the opportunity to communicate in any way the person can do it, listen, learn, read, write or speak.

The main idea of the BarCamp 2010 in Kazakhstan was to let people know more about the cyber space, World Web and to create a new societies, groups, associations in the Internet. The problem is that the Kazakhstan citizens do not use Internet a lot, not because of the specifics of the nation but because of the first of all, the opportunity, which thousands of the Kazakhstan citizens do not have and also the governmental rules, which restrict the users to create in the Internet what ever they want, as the example of the LiveJournal, which was closed because of the governmental wish.

According to the date of the BarCamp website about 686 people all over the Kazakhstan were registered to the event. Also, Bar Camp has given 34 grants for travelers from different parts of Kazakhstan, in order to give them the opportunity to be presented on the event.

I have asked several students of the KIMEP, who attendant the conferences about there feelings and understanding of the connection of civil society to the BarCamp, both of them started to talk about the presentation of the 21 Century Literacy. The presentation was interesting and was done in a professional way, so that everyone was listening to them, also the topic, of course, was interesting for the students as all of them are in someway connected to the Internet and as a consequence to the civil societies.

The people, who have attended the conferences, could learn a lot of interesting things about new programs and companies, such as Mobile Internet, Ovi store, Internet Explorer 8 and The Soros Foundation.

Actually, the BarCamp was created because of the World Web, and all of the organizers of the event were closely connected to the Internet. In fact the event is very beneficial for the different kinds of journalists, bloggers, photo-journalists, writers, also, for marketers, PR managers for any kind of professionals in the sphere of media and public.

Participatory audience has the opportunity to talk about different things openly and discuses any issues they are interested in. BarCamp gives the opportunity to people to feel free in the journalism sphere, so that everyone could ask the questions, it does not matter is he/she the student or instructor.

To conclude, I would to say that actually such kinds of the events show the involvement of the government to the common problems. No any support of the officials to such kind of events, even though I thinks that the government even against the event, which collaborates such amount of the journalists in one place…It is sad because the government plays the main role of the people’s opportunity to use Internet and as a consequence to create a civil societies….

How does the Internet help to facilitate Global Civil Society?

It (Internet) helps Civil Societies to build their own world in the Internet, to communicate easily, to conduct their activities and save a lot of time.

When the Internet was just created and presented to the public no one actually understand the meaning of such great, global and helpful tool. After sometime the societies start to explore the Internet and finally get used to it.

Nowadays, the huge amount of people could not live without Internet, and it is a tool for the Civil Societies, which allows creating communities, to participate in different activities.

It allows people to decrease the barriers, they have the opportunity to write what they ant and do whatever you want to do. Community have different tools, the information should not be checked by editors and could be published easily. It allows publishing information in few minutes.

The Internet gives the huge opportunities to the Civil Societies to facilitates access to published data, information and knowledge;  lowers the barriers to publication and enables groups and individuals to bypass traditional gatekeepers in media and publishing; facilitates rapid communication on a global scale;  facilitates the sharing of information resources;  facilitates the formation and maintenance of ‘virtual communities’ of people or institutions with shared interests.

Do we have the opportunity to choose?

Guest came to recruit students!

The guest tried to recruit the students to write, learn and read Kazakh sources. The whole lecture was about the Kazakh sources, especially about the issue, which guest considered to be the problem – no interest to Kazakh sources.

I do not speak Kazakh, the teacher in the school was not really interested in studying us Kazakh language……but of course, everyone is searching for someone to blame…yeap, it is my problem and may be I did not wanted to learn Kazakh by myself… no blaming…=)

Unfortunately, I could not use the websites and blogs on Kazakh language. So because of my uneducation (of Kazakh language) I could not really say something specific about the lecture…

The whole class the guest tried to show the students that Kazakh sources are developing and in general, exist. It was Interesting to see new side of the internet!

Also the guest showed us the wordpress in a new light, Kazakh wordpress. That also, was interesting to see.

But the one big problem, which exists and which raised in the lecture – government aggressively tries to make people speak and learn Kazakh language, and I think that such enthusiasts of Kazakh language support government in it.

I against that kind of behavior, I think that community should have the opportunity to choose, someone wants, someone does not. Also, for some people it is difficult to learn languages or person just does not have the time to do it, even if he/she forced to do it…

From the one side it is great that today we have Kazakh websites and web logs, but on another hand we are not given the chance to choose…

Kazakhstan is multinational country, and I am proud of that, do not make it different…

Hand of Help

One of the most useful things for me, in New Information Technologies is the willingness of differentiation between Social and Technical Network!

Something like: What is the biggest difference between Social and Technical Network?

Night.kz

Another Kazakhstani Website, which is about social communication is Night.kz.

I do not use this Website but I know about it, and would like to describe it.

As for me the Night.kz Website was created for people, who like to party a lot. They could find theirs photos on Website and also share the information, they have, in forum.

For me, it is technical Website, there are some moderators, who would not let you to write about everything you want to.

I do not like the design of the Website –  too primitive but seems to be  liked by the party-people, I think that they were the target for creators so it works.

What I like, users could find information without any registration. Also users could download the music and pictures from Website and read the articles.

On the left side of the page we could see the main menu, what is very useful and easy to use.

To create connections with others, who have similar interests and to inform and be informed – the concept of the Night.kz Website. They inform about events, they create the community of party-people, with similar interests and wants.

The prices for tickets!!!

I really keen on cinema!!!

I LOVE a lot to go to the cinema, because of that I would like to write about the Website, which helps me a lot of finding the movies, I would like to see, and also to find out in which cinema it is going to be.

This Website is called Kino.kz and by domain you could see that it is Kazakhstani  Website.

Location is very important in such kind of information Websites so that users should be located in the area the Website talks about. It is very useful that Kino.kz has specific links to different cities of the Kazakhstan.

To inform and be informed the main concept of this Website. I like a lot such kind of sites because it is very easy to use, you do not need to be registered, in order to see the information you search for.

Also I like the design of the Kino.kz it do not irritate by too much bright colors and in the same time not a serious one.

It allows participation so that the user, who is not even registrant for this Website, could easily vote for movies or write his or her opinion.

On the left side of the page we could see the latest movies or what is going to be in the future, also we could match time, movie and the place on Kino.kz.

The best feature of the Kino.kz is that we could see the prices for tickets!!!

Vkontacte

Leila has chosen Vkontacte social network, which is actually a prototype of the Facebook I wrote about.

So about this kind of web opium  in our days.

Vkontacte on of the most useful and popular websites in our young generation, I mean in CIS countries, people in Europe use Facebook.

I have almost the same feeling about vkontacte as for Facebook as I described in my post…=)

AP

Alimkulova decide to choose AP (Associated Press) as a social network.

I like the format of the description of the website Alimkulova gave, I really like what she wrote about and how she did it. The first idea was about the seriousness of the front page of the website but I like the way it was described, exactly in a serious one! =)

I could not disagree with this point (weak front page) of the writer, for me it seems to be very serious too, and I do not think it works good, too…

Also the pictures, photos and videos, which AP gives to the readers and other topic, which was described by the author – I like the way the Associated Press chooses the photos to be posed, it is always in a right way, it gives the feeling of the article.

I do not like that common users could not write the comments, but I like that all the contact information is given to the readers so that users could easily contact editors and tell them theirs opinion or may be some suggestions about improvement of the website.

BBC World

Svetlana wrote about BBC World and BBC. co.uk parts of the international website.

I very like BBC website I use it a lot, anytime I need to find out some news I go to BBC website.

As it was written by the Svetlana it is very easy to use and it quickly to download pages on this news website.

It always gives the opportunity to find whatever you search for, it shows thousands of the pictures, and all of them done in a really good  quality – very bright and some times terrifying so that you could feel what people on the photos feel.

I strongly agree with Svetlana that it is on of the most useful site it terms of high speed, a lot of information, easy to use and it could be read on the different languages.

Also I could not be silent about on of the, in my opinion, not really collaborating features like limited access to the comments, only editors could write a comment but common users could not, it creates a feeling of one way communication.
